I was born in Calgary, Alberta, raised in the Vancouver area, and eventually came to Nova Scotia in 1995. Originally here for a visit, I fell in love with Nova Scotia and, possibly due to my Scottish heritage, felt more at home here than out West.
My parents and two younger sisters came out a few years later, and we have all lived here ever since.
Admittedly, I generally failed as an employee as I consistently bucked the status quo, which generally doesn't go over very well in a traditional employment setting, so it was fortunate for me that I had a keen interest in computers and technology.
After about 8 years of doing sound for various bands around the province, including Natalie MacMaster, Rawlins Cross, and Big Picture (now Mir), I started a small computer business with a partner and began to learn how to create RIAs or "Rich Internet Applications" using Macromedia Director and Flash. My skills honed, I partnered with a local team of animators to produce the first interactive CD Rom ever made for wide distribution entirely using Macromedia Flash technology.
This was a series of "interactive books" based on the Little Golden Books. The company sold an estimated two million copies of those titles and I ended up, through a series of fortunate events, working more with that team as it grew to become an online training and education company.
At one time, our company was the largest flash-based animation studio in North America, with 50 full-time animators, and after working with them for about a year, I eventually found myself at the head of the Canadian operation with around 70 employees.
After a couple of years, I reunited with some of my former coworkers to join Jeffrey at TrainOne, and we are now in the fifth year of our partnership. I work from home and travel minimally.
I feel fortunate to be able to help and give back to my community.
